What Makes SPC Different.

SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite. The core is made from approximately 60% limestone (calcium carbonate) and 40% PVC, pressed under extreme heat and pressure. This creates a rigid, dense core that is 100% waterproof, dimensionally stable, and resistant to denting. Unlike laminate (which uses an HDF wood-fibre core that swells when wet) or traditional vinyl (which is flexible and can dent), SPC provides the best of both worlds: the rigidity of hard flooring with the ease of vinyl installation.

SPC is waterproof (laminate isn’t). SPC has a rigid core (traditional vinyl doesn’t). SPC is affordable (engineered timber costs 2–3x more). SPC has built-in underlay (most alternatives don’t). In Australia, yes. "Hybrid flooring" is the marketing term used for SPC flooring. The name "hybrid" refers to the combination of vinyl aesthetics with a rigid stone-based core. At Hippo Floors, our entire hybrid range uses SPC technology. When you see hybrid flooring at any Australian retailer, it’s almost always SPC. SPC flooring uses a click-lock mechanism for tool-free floating floor installation. No glue, nails, or adhesive needed. You can install over concrete, timber subfloors, or existing tiles without removal. Most rooms can be completed in a single day.
