Your Questions About Flooring Accessories.

Common questions about flooring accessories including transition strips, scotia, adhesive and installation essentials. Contact us if you need personalised advice.

Does your hybrid flooring come with underlay?

Yes. Every SPC hybrid board in our range comes with IXPE underlay already attached to the back of the plank. Our 6.5mm hybrid flooring has 1.5mm IXPE underlay attached and our 9.5mm hybrid flooring has 2mm IXPE underlay attached.

You do not need to buy or install separate underlay. In fact, we recommend that you do not add a second layer of underlay as this can make the floor feel spongy and interfere with the click lock joints over time.

What transition strips do I need?

The type depends on where your flooring meets other surfaces:

  • T-bar: where two floating floors of the same height meet (e.g., between rooms)
  • Reducer: where your floating floor meets a lower surface (e.g., tiles)
  • End cap: where your floor ends at a doorway or step

We stock profiles in multiple colours to match our hybrid and engineered timber ranges.

Can I install hybrid flooring without scotia?

Scotia (or quarter-round moulding) covers the required 10mm expansion gap between the floor and the wall. While some installations use skirting boards instead, scotia is the easiest and most common solution — especially during renovations where you don’t want to remove existing skirting.

What adhesive do I need for engineered timber?

For glue down engineered timber installations, use a flexible polyurethane flooring adhesive. This allows for minor timber movement while maintaining a secure bond. We stock adhesive suitable for both concrete and plywood subfloors.

For floating installations with click lock boards, no adhesive is needed. Simply click the boards together over a flat surface.

Do I need a moisture barrier over concrete?

For engineered timber floating installations and laminate flooring over concrete slabs, a polyethylene moisture barrier is recommended. It prevents moisture wicking up from the slab and reaching the floor core material.

For our SPC hybrid flooring, the attached IXPE underlay already includes a moisture barrier so no additional barrier is required.

What tools do I need for click-lock flooring?

Basic tools for installing click-lock hybrid or laminate flooring:

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Spacers (10mm for expansion gaps)
  • Rubber mallet (or tapping block)
  • Pull bar (for the last row against walls)
  • Saw (drop saw, jigsaw, or circular saw for cuts)

No glue, no nails, no specialised equipment needed. Most homeowners already have these tools.

How much extra material should I order?

We recommend ordering 8–10% extra for standard straight-lay installations to account for cuts, waste, and any planks with minor defects. For herringbone patterns, order 15–20% extra due to the additional cuts required by the zig-zag layout.

Rooms with lots of angles, doorways, or alcoves should go closer to the higher end of these ranges.

Can I return unused accessories?

Yes — unused, unopened accessories can be returned within our standard return period. Contact our team to arrange a return. We recommend measuring carefully and ordering with a small buffer so you have everything you need without significant surplus.

All our SPC hybrid flooring includes underlay pre-attached to every board, so no separate underlay is needed. You may still need transition strips, scotia mouldings and other finishing products to complete your installation.

For engineered timber and laminate flooring, separate underlay is required and we stock options to suit every subfloor type. Not sure what you need? Contact our team for personalised advice.

What accessories do you need?

Every flooring project needs a few essentials beyond the planks themselves. The right underlay, transitions, and trims ensure your floor performs well, looks professional, and lasts the distance.

For SPC hybrid flooring (6.5mm and 9.5mm): Underlay is already attached to every board. You just need transition strips where flooring meets other surfaces and scotia to finish wall edges.

For laminate: Separate underlay with integrated moisture barrier, transition strips and scotia.

For engineered timber: Adhesive for glue down installations, or underlay for floating installations, plus transition strips and scotia.

Underlay guide.

Understanding underlay requirements is important for getting the best result from your flooring. Here is what you need to know for each flooring type.

Underlay types

SPC Hybrid Flooring (no separate underlay needed)

All our SPC hybrid boards, both the 6.5mm and 9.5mm ranges, come with IXPE underlay pre-attached. This provides cushioning, sound insulation and a moisture barrier all in one. Do not add additional underlay as too much cushion puts stress on the click lock joints.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring requires separate underlay. Choose standard 2mm foam for most installations or acoustic underlay for apartments and upper level rooms. Over concrete slabs, use a combination underlay with a built in moisture barrier.

Engineered Timber (floating installation)

When floating engineered timber, use a quality underlay suitable for the subfloor type. Over concrete, ensure the underlay includes a moisture barrier. For glue down installations, no underlay is used as the boards are adhered directly to the subfloor.

Accessories buying tips.

Three tips to make sure you order the right accessories for your flooring project.

1

Measure transitions before ordering

Count the number of doorways, room transitions, and exposed edges in your project. Each one needs a transition strip or end cap. Measure the width of each opening to order the correct profile length.

2

Match scotia colours to your floor

Scotia and quarter-round mouldings come in multiple colours to match our flooring ranges. Order samples alongside your flooring samples to ensure a colour match before buying in bulk.

3

Don't forget the moisture barrier

Installing engineered timber or laminate over concrete? Make sure your underlay includes a moisture barrier, or lay a separate polyethylene sheet. This prevents slab moisture reaching your floor core and causing damage over time. Note that our SPC hybrid flooring already has a moisture barrier built into the attached underlay.

Complete your install right.

Accessories might not be the exciting part of a flooring project, but they’re what separates a DIY-looking result from a professional finish. The right underlay, transitions, and trims protect your investment and make your floor perform as intended.
