Your Questions About 6.5mm Hybrid Flooring.

Everything you need to know about our 6.5mm SPC hybrid flooring range — pricing, installation, colours, and more. Contact us if you need more help.

Does 6.5mm hybrid flooring need underlay?

Yes. Unlike our 9.5mm range which has built-in IXPE underlay, the 6.5mm hybrid flooring requires a separate underlay. We recommend a standard 2mm foam underlay for most installations, or an acoustic underlay for apartments and upper-level rooms. Underlay is available in our accessories collection.

Is 6.5mm thick enough for a family home?

Yes. The 6.5mm SPC core is rigid and stable underfoot. It performs well in bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and home offices. The waterproof SPC core handles everything a family home throws at it — spills, pet claws, heavy furniture, and daily foot traffic.

For high-traffic hallways, open-plan living areas, or apartments where acoustic performance matters, the 9.5mm range offers a thicker core, enhanced wear layer, and built-in underlay for additional durability and sound dampening.

What colours are available in the 6.5mm range?

Our 6.5mm SPC hybrid flooring comes in 7 curated colours:

  • Pale Sand — warm, light neutral
  • QLD Spotted Gum — classic Australian timber tone
  • Charcoal — bold, dark statement
  • Raw Neutral — versatile mid-tone
  • Light Grey — clean, contemporary
  • Coastal Blackbutt — relaxed coastal character
  • Beige Sand — warm, earthy neutral

How does 6.5mm hybrid compare to laminate flooring?

6.5mm SPC hybrid and laminate flooring sit at a similar price point, but they're built very differently:

  • Water resistance: 6.5mm hybrid is 100% waterproof (SPC core). Laminate is not waterproof — the HDF core swells with water exposure.
  • Durability: Hybrid is heavier, more rigid, and better at bridging minor subfloor imperfections.
  • Feel underfoot: Hybrid feels denser and more solid. Laminate is lighter and can sound hollow.
  • Rooms: Hybrid is safe for kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries. Laminate should be kept to dry areas only.

For most Australian homes, 6.5mm hybrid is the smarter choice — especially for open-plan areas or any room where water contact is possible. Read the full hybrid vs laminate comparison.

Can I use 6.5mm hybrid in a bathroom?

Yes. The SPC core is 100% waterproof, making 6.5mm hybrid flooring safe for bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens. The surface handles standing water, splashes, and spills without damage.

Ensure you maintain the 10mm expansion gap around the perimeter and seal any penetrations (around pipes, vanity bases, etc.) with silicone to prevent water reaching the subfloor underneath. The floor itself is waterproof; the goal is to prevent water getting under the floor where it can’t dry.

How does the 6.5mm compare to the 9.5mm range?

Both ranges use the same waterproof SPC technology and click-lock installation. The key differences:

  • Underlay: 6.5mm needs separate underlay; 9.5mm has built-in IXPE
  • Warranty: 6.5mm = 20 years; 9.5mm = 25 years
  • Feel: 9.5mm feels more substantial and quieter underfoot
  • Colours: 6.5mm has 7 colours; 9.5mm has 5 colours + herringbone

Choose 6.5mm for budget renovations, rentals, and bedrooms. Choose 9.5mm for main living areas, apartments, and high-traffic zones. Read our detailed comparison: Hybrid vs Engineered Timber vs Laminate.

Is 6.5mm hybrid flooring scratch-resistant?

Yes. The 6.5mm SPC hybrid has a UV-stabilised wear layer that resists light scuffs, surface scratches, and everyday marks. It handles pets, furniture, and foot traffic well for a floor at this price point.

For best results, use felt pads under furniture legs, avoid dragging heavy items across the floor, and keep pet nails trimmed. The 9.5mm range has an enhanced wear layer with higher scratch resistance if you have large dogs or very heavy traffic.

Can I get free samples of the 6.5mm range?

Yes — order free samples here. We’ll post them to your door anywhere in Australia. Samples are the best way to compare colours, textures, and thickness in your actual room lighting before committing to a full order.

6.5mm hybrid flooring tips.

Three practical tips to get the best result from your 6.5mm SPC hybrid installation.

1

Choose the right underlay

The 6.5mm range needs separate underlay. Use 2mm foam underlay for standard installations over concrete or timber. For apartments or upper levels, choose an acoustic-rated underlay to meet body corporate noise requirements.

2

Order 8–10% extra material

Always order 8–10% more than your measured area to account for cuts, waste, and any planks with minor defects. For rooms with lots of angles or doorways, go closer to 10%.

3

Acclimatise the planks first

Leave unopened boxes in the room for 48 hours before installation. This lets the planks adjust to the room’s temperature and helps prevent expansion or contraction after they’re locked in.
