Your Questions About Hybrid Flooring.

Got questions about hybrid flooring? Here are the answers our customers ask most. Can’t find what you need? Get in touch and we’ll help you out.

Is hybrid flooring waterproof?

Yes. Hybrid flooring uses a stone polymer composite (SPC) core that is 100% waterproof. Unlike laminate or solid timber, SPC hybrid will not swell, warp, or delaminate when exposed to water. This makes hybrid flooring safe for kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, and any area where spills or moisture are part of daily life. For a full breakdown of how different flooring types handle water, see our waterproof flooring comparison.

Both our 6.5mm hybrid range and 9.5mm hybrid range are fully waterproof. The key difference is thickness, underlay, and warranty — not water resistance. Every plank in every range handles water equally well.

How much does hybrid flooring cost in Australia?

Hybrid flooring prices in Australia vary depending on thickness, wear layer, and brand. At Hippo Floors, our pricing is straightforward. For a detailed breakdown including installation and underlay costs, see our hybrid flooring cost guide.

Can I install hybrid flooring myself?

Absolutely. All our hybrid flooring uses a click-lock system designed for DIY installation. You don’t need glue, nails, or specialist tools — a tape measure, saw, rubber mallet, and spacers are all that’s required. Most rooms can be completed in a weekend. For step-by-step instructions, read our DIY installation guide, and check our DIY flooring tips before you start.

The planks float over your subfloor (concrete, timber, or existing hard floors) with a 10mm expansion gap around the perimeter. Our 9.5mm range is the easiest to DIY because the built-in underlay means fewer steps. The 6.5mm range needs separate underlay laid first. Either way, the click-lock mechanism is the same and very straightforward.

How does hybrid flooring compare to laminate?

Hybrid flooring and laminate flooring look similar at first glance, but they’re built very differently:

  • Water resistance: Hybrid is 100% waterproof (SPC core). Laminate is not waterproof (HDF core swells with water exposure).
  • Durability: Hybrid is heavier, more rigid, and better at bridging minor subfloor imperfections.
  • Feel underfoot: Hybrid feels denser and more substantial. Laminate is lighter and can feel hollow.

For most Australian homes, hybrid flooring is the better investment — especially if your project includes kitchens, open-plan areas, or any room where water contact is possible. Read the full hybrid vs laminate comparison for a deeper dive.

What subfloors can hybrid flooring go over?

Hybrid flooring can be installed over most existing subfloors:

  • Concrete slabs — the most common subfloor in Australian homes. Use a moisture barrier underneath. See our concrete installation guide.
  • Timber subfloors — ensure the surface is level and secure (no squeaky or loose boards). Read our timber subfloor guide.
  • Existing tiles — as long as the tiles are level, firmly adhered, and the grout lines aren’t too deep. Learn more in our hybrid over tiles guide.
  • Existing vinyl or linoleum — if it’s flat and well-bonded to the subfloor beneath.

The key requirement is that the subfloor must be level within 3mm over 3 metres, dry, and structurally sound. Use self-levelling compound to fix dips or humps before installation.

Does hybrid flooring need underlay?

It depends on the range:

  • 6.5mm hybrid flooringyes, requires separate underlay. We recommend 2mm foam underlay for most installations, or acoustic underlay for apartments and upper-level rooms. Underlay is available in our accessories collection. For help choosing the right type, see our underlay guide.
  • 9.5mm hybrid flooringno, it has built-in IXPE acoustic underlay bonded to the bottom of every plank. No additional underlay is needed. This saves time, money, and ensures consistent acoustic performance.

Never double up underlay (i.e., don’t add separate underlay under the 9.5mm range). Too much cushion can stress the click-lock joints and cause issues over time.

How long does hybrid flooring last?

With proper installation and basic maintenance, hybrid flooring lasts 15–25+ years in residential settings. Our 6.5mm range carries a 20-year residential warranty, while the 9.5mm range has a 25-year residential warranty. For a deeper look at what affects longevity, read our guide on how long hybrid flooring lasts.

The main factors affecting lifespan are wear layer thickness, UV exposure, and daily care. Sweep regularly, damp-mop as needed, and avoid dragging heavy furniture without felt pads. For full care instructions, read our guide: How to Clean & Maintain Hybrid Flooring.

Is hybrid flooring good for pets?

Yes. Hybrid flooring is one of the best flooring options for households with pets. The SPC core is 100% waterproof (handles accidents without damage), the wear layer is scratch-resistant (handles claws better than timber), and the surface is easy to clean (no grout lines or fibres for hair and dirt to collect in).

Why choose hybrid flooring for your home?

Hybrid flooring sits at the intersection of price, performance, and looks. It gives you the realistic timber aesthetic of engineered timber with the waterproof toughness that laminate can’t offer — all at a price point that makes it the smartest flooring choice for most Australian renovations.

Unlike solid timber, hybrid flooring won’t expand, cup, or gap with seasonal humidity changes. Unlike laminate, it won’t swell if water sits on the surface. And unlike tiles, it’s warm underfoot, quiet to walk on, and installs in a fraction of the time. For families with kids, pets, or busy households, hybrid is the practical choice that doesn’t sacrifice style. See how hybrid compares to engineered timber and vinyl plank in our detailed comparisons.

It’s also the most versatile flooring option we sell: hybrid works in every room of the house — bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, and even commercial spaces. That means one floor type can run continuously through your entire home for a seamless, spacious look.

How much does hybrid flooring cost in Australia?

The cost of hybrid flooring in Australia depends on the product range, underlay requirements, and whether you’re installing DIY or hiring a professional. At Hippo Floors, we keep pricing transparent and competitive — no hidden costs, no inflated RRPs.

Hybrid flooring tips from the experts.

Three things that make the biggest difference when installing hybrid flooring in your home.

1

Acclimatise before you install

Leave your hybrid flooring boxes in the room for at least 48 hours before installation. This lets the planks adjust to the room’s temperature and humidity, reducing the chance of expansion or contraction after they’re locked in.

2

Check subfloor flatness first

SPC hybrid is rigid, which means subfloor imperfections show up more than they would with a softer floor. Check for dips and bumps — your subfloor should be flat within 3mm over 3 metres. Level it before you start laying.

3

Always leave expansion gaps

Keep a 10mm gap around all walls, door frames, pipes, and fixed objects. Hybrid flooring expands and contracts slightly with temperature changes. Without gaps, you’ll get buckling or peaking. Cover the gap with scotia or skirting boards.

Is hybrid flooring worth the investment?

For most Australian homes, hybrid flooring is the smartest flooring investment you can make. It gives you the timber look, waterproof performance, and long-term durability that no other floor type can match at this price point.

Consider the alternatives:

  • Laminate (see our range) — cheaper per plank, but not waterproof and generally less durable long-term.
  • Tiles — waterproof and durable, but cold underfoot, expensive to install, and grout lines need maintenance.
