Best Flooring for Kitchens — Waterproof Options Compared.

The kitchen is the heart of every Australian home — and it takes a beating. Between water splashes at the sink, dropped pots and pans, hot spills near the stove, and constant foot traffic, your kitchen floor needs to be waterproof, durable, and easy to clean. Traditional timber looks beautiful but warps when water sits on it. Tiles are cold underfoot and grout lines trap grease. That is why SPC hybrid flooring has become Australia's most popular kitchen flooring choice.

Every room has unique requirements that affect your flooring choice. For kitchens, consider: Moisture exposure — rooms near water sources (kitchens, bathrooms, laundries) need 100% waterproof flooring like SPC hybrid. See our waterproof flooring comparison for a comparison. Foot traffic — high-traffic areas benefit from a thicker wear layer (0.5mm on our 9.5mm range vs 0.3mm on 6.5mm). Subfloor type — whether you're on concrete slab or timber subfloor affects preparation requirements. Read our subfloor preparation guide. Acoustic needs — apartments and multi-storey homes often require acoustic-rated underlay; our 9.5mm range has this built in. Heating — all our hybrid flooring is compatible with hydronic underfloor heating up to 28°C surface temperature. Style — browse our colour ranges from light greys to warm spotted gum tones. Kitchens Flooring FAQs.

Is hybrid flooring good for kitchens?

Yes — SPC hybrid flooring is one of the best options for kitchens. It is 100% waterproof, resists scratches and dents from dropped items, requires no special cleaning, and provides warmer, softer footing than tiles. The click-lock planks create tight seams that prevent water from reaching the subfloor.

Can water damage hybrid flooring in a kitchen?

The planks themselves are completely waterproof — water cannot damage the SPC core. However, if large amounts of water sit on the floor for extended periods, it can seep through click-lock seams and pool underneath. For normal kitchen use (splashes, spills, mopping), hybrid flooring handles moisture without any issues. Wipe up large spills within a reasonable time and your floor will last decades.

Should I put hybrid flooring under my kitchen cabinets?

No — float the hybrid flooring up to your cabinet bases, not underneath them. Cabinets are too heavy and will prevent the floor from expanding and contracting naturally. Use kickboard trim to cover the expansion gap between the floor and cabinet base. If you are installing a new kitchen, install cabinets first, then float the floor up to them.

What is the best thickness for kitchen hybrid flooring?

We recommend the 9.5mm SPC hybrid for kitchens. The extra thickness provides better comfort for standing while cooking, improved sound dampening, and a more premium underfoot feel. The built-in IXPE underlay also means one less step during installation. If budget is a priority, the 6.5mm performs just as well for waterproofing and durability.

Can hybrid flooring go over existing kitchen tiles?

Yes, as long as the tiles are flat, level, and firmly bonded to the subfloor. Remove any cracked or loose tiles, fill grout lines if they are deeper than 2mm, and lay underlay before clicking the hybrid planks over the top. This saves the cost and mess of tile removal.

What's Covered by Your Flooring Warranty?

All our flooring comes with a manufacturer's warranty covering defects in workmanship and materials. Our 9.5mm SPC hybrid flooring carries up to a 25-year residential warranty and 5-year commercial warranty. Our 6.5mm SPC hybrid flooring comes with a 20-year residential warranty and 3-year commercial warranty. engineered timber flooring includes warranties specific to each product line. The warranty covers manufacturing faults including peeling, delamination, excessive wear, discolouration not caused by UV exposure, and structural defects in the click-lock system. It does not cover damage from improper installation, neglect, flooding, or accidents. We also comply with Australian Consumer Law, which provides additional statutory protections. For the full warranty terms and how to make a claim, read our warranty guide.
