Engineered timber works beautifully in living rooms, bedrooms, dining areas, hallways, and home offices. The real timber top layer adds warmth and sophistication to any space. It's ideal for open-plan living where you want a seamless, premium floor that ties everything together. It's also a strong choice for heritage homes or spaces where genuine timber character matters. We don't recommend it for wet areas like bathrooms or laundries - SPC hybrid is the better pick there.

In terms of look and feel underfoot, engineered timber is virtually identical to solid hardwood. The top layer is real timber, so you get the same natural warmth, grain, and texture. The multi-layer core underneath actually gives it better dimensional stability than solid timber, meaning it's less likely to expand, contract, or cup with temperature and humidity changes. Most people can't tell the difference once it's laid.

It depends on the installation method. If you're floating the floor (click-lock or tongue-and-groove over a subfloor), you'll typically need a separate underlay to provide cushioning, moisture protection, and sound dampening. If you're gluing it directly to a concrete slab or existing subfloor, underlay isn't needed. We can advise on the best approach for your specific subfloor situation.

Not fully waterproof like SPC hybrid, but engineered timber handles moisture far better than solid hardwood. The multi-layer core resists expansion and contraction from humidity changes, so it won't cup or buckle under normal conditions. It's fine for kitchens where spills get wiped up quickly, but we don't recommend it for bathrooms, laundries, or any room where standing water is likely. For wet areas, our SPC hybrid range is the better option.

Yes, if you choose a click-lock or tongue-and-groove engineered timber, it's a very manageable DIY project. The planks lock together without glue or nails, and you can float the floor over most clean, level subfloors. Glue-down installation is also an option but usually suits experienced installers. You'll need basic tools - tape measure, spacers, tapping block, and a saw for end cuts. Most confident DIYers can handle a standard room in a day.

The biggest difference is the surface - engineered timber has a real timber top layer that gives you genuine wood grain, warmth, and character. SPC hybrid uses a printed vinyl layer over a stone polymer core. SPC is fully waterproof and more scratch-resistant, making it ideal for wet areas and high-traffic family homes. Engineered timber delivers a more premium look and feel, and it can be sanded and refinished over its lifetime. If authenticity matters most, go engineered. If durability and water resistance are the priority, go SPC.

Regular sweeping or vacuuming keeps grit off the surface, which is the main thing that causes micro-scratches over time. Damp mop with warm water and a pH-neutral timber floor cleaner when needed. Avoid steam mops, excessive water, and harsh chemical cleaners. Use felt pads under furniture legs and mats at entry points. With basic care, engineered timber floors can last decades and still look beautiful. If the surface wears over time, many engineered timbers can be lightly sanded and refinished to bring them back to life.

Measure each room's length and width in metres, multiply to get the total square metreage, and add 10% on top for waste. That 10% covers cuts around doorways, edges, and any odd angles in your layout. Australian hardwood planks come in generous widths, so waste can vary slightly depending on room shape. If you're not sure, send us your room dimensions and we'll calculate exactly what you need - we do this every day and we'll make sure you don't over-order or run short.
