The kitchen is the hardest room in the house on flooring, and it's not close. It cops water (sink splash, dishwasher steam, the odd dropped ice cube that hides under the fridge), impacts (pots, pans, jars of passata), heat and grease around the cooktop, and more foot traffic than any other room — usually in shoes. A good kitchen floor has to shrug all of that off and still look right for twenty years, because it's welded into the most expensive room in the house.

That's why the shortlist for kitchens is short. You're picking between hybrid flooring, laminate, glue-down vinyl, tiles, and (with caveats) real timber — and the right answer depends on how your kitchen gets used, not on which one photographs best.

For most Australian kitchens, hybrid flooring is the sweet spot. Its rigid stone-composite (SPC) core doesn't flex, swell or move with temperature, the boards themselves shrug off everyday splashes and spills, and the tough wear layer handles dropped cookware, claws and school shoes. Unlike tiles it's warm and quiet underfoot — a real thing when you stand at a bench for an hour — and the attached acoustic underlay keeps the clatter down in open-plan homes.

Our honest caveat, because plenty of sites won't give you one: hybrid is water resistant, not waterproof. Wiped-up spills and normal kitchen life are exactly what it's built for; a slow leak left under a dishwasher for a month is not. If your kitchen has a genuine flooding risk — or you simply want the maximum-water answer — that's what the vinyl below is for.

Search for kitchen flooring and you'll drown in “100% waterproof” claims. Here's the truth: with any floating floor — hybrid included — the boards may handle water well, but water that sits in the joins or gets underneath the floor can still cause trouble. Calling a floating floor waterproof is marketing, not physics.

The genuinely waterproof plank option is glue-down vinyl: the vinyl itself is impervious, and because every plank is fully adhered to the subfloor there are no floating joins for water to find. The pattern: plank floors win on comfort, warmth, price and repairability; tiles win on ultimate water and heat tolerance and lose on everything you feel through your feet. If you love the tile look but not the tile feel, several of our ranges come in stone-look finishes too.

The classic kitchen dilemma. Tiles are fully waterproof, handle anything hot, and last decades — but they're cold in winter, hard on your legs, merciless to dropped crockery, and grout lines are where kitchens go grubby. When a tile cracks, the repair is a trade job and matching discontinued tiles is a lottery. Tiling is also the expensive route: $45–$100/m² to lay before you've bought a tile.

Timber-look planks flip all of that: warm, quieter, easier on your back, cheaper to install (hybrid and laminate are DIY-able click floors), and if a board is ever damaged it can be swapped. The trade-off is water discipline — wipe, don't soak. And here's the kicker for renovators: you usually don't even need to rip your old tiles out. Most modern Australian kitchens aren't rooms — they're one end of the living zone. Running a single floor through the kitchen, dining and living space makes the whole area read bigger and ends the ugly transition-strip-at-the-bench-line look. That's a quiet argument for plank floors over tiles: tiling just the kitchen chops the space in two, and tiling the whole living zone gets expensive and cold fast.
