Flooring samples — FAQs.
Why should I order flooring samples before buying?
Flooring colours are the single most mis-judged thing in a renovation — every screen shows them differently, and showroom lighting is nothing like your lounge room at 6pm. A sample lets you check the colour, texture and quality of hybrid flooring, laminate or engineered timber in your own light, against your own walls and cabinetry, before you commit to 60 square metres of it.
How big are Hippo Floors samples?
Our samples are 300mm long — roughly twice the size of the swatch cards most flooring companies send. You get a real cut of the actual plank, so you can feel the surface texture, see the bevel edges and get a true read on the colour variation, not a photo print.
How much do flooring samples cost?
The samples themselves are free. Delivery is a flat $10 with Australia Post, no matter where you are in Australia — order up to 3 samples in one box.
How fast do samples arrive?
We dispatch within 24 hours on business days, and AusPost typically delivers in 2–7 days depending on where you are. You'll get a tracking number the moment your box ships.
Which flooring types can I sample?
Everything except vinyl: hybrid flooring (6.5mm and 9.5mm SPC), laminate flooring, engineered timber, Australian hardwood species like spotted gum and blackbutt, plus our herringbone flooring ranges. If you need help with a vinyl colour, call us and we'll talk you through it.
Do herringbone and chevron samples come in the pattern?
No — herringbone and chevron samples are supplied as a regular plank in the same colour and finish. They're for checking the colour and surface in your space; the pattern comes from how the boards are laid.
How do I choose between hybrid, laminate and engineered timber?
Order a sample of each and compare them side by side — the difference is obvious in hand. Hybrid is water resistant and suits busy households and kitchens, laminate gives the most realistic timber texture per dollar, and engineered timber is real wood. Our guides on hybrid vs laminate and hybrid vs engineered timber break down the trade-offs honestly.
What should I check when my samples arrive?
Look at each sample in morning, afternoon and artificial light — colours shift dramatically through the day. Lay them next to your skirting, cabinets and benchtops, and walk on them barefoot to feel the texture. If you're stuck between two, our find-your-floor quiz or a quick call usually settles it.
Can I order more than 3 samples?
Each order is capped at 3 so boxes stay flat-rate to post — but you're welcome to place a second order, or call us and we'll sort you out.
