The appeal of a dark floor.
A dark floor instantly makes a room feel warmer, richer and more premium. Deep charcoals, walnuts and smoked timber tones bring a sense of depth and quality that lighter floors can't quite match, and they create beautiful contrast against white walls, light cabinetry and black fixtures — that modern, high‑end look so many people are after.
Dark floors also ground a space. In an open‑plan home they give the eye somewhere to settle and make large rooms feel cosier and more considered.
Where dark flooring works best.
Dark floors look their absolute best in rooms with plenty of natural light, where the colour can show its depth without making the space feel closed in. Living rooms, bedrooms and feature spaces are naturals. They do show dust, pet hair and footprints a little more than a light floor, so they reward a quick regular sweep — which makes a water‑resistant, easy‑clean hybrid board a smart pick if you love the look but live a busy life.

Dark, charcoal and near‑black tones.
"Dark flooring" covers a lovely range — from warm walnut browns through to deep charcoal and near‑black floorboards. Charcoal hybrid is the closest thing to a true black floor in a tough, water‑resistant board, while darker engineered timber gives you genuine deep‑toned wood underfoot. If you want to soften things a step, our grey flooring range bridges the gap between dark and neutral.
Styling a dark floor.
Balance is everything with a dark floor. Keep walls and larger furniture lighter so the room stays bright and the floor becomes the anchor rather than swallowing the space. Layer in warm timber, brass or soft textiles to add warmth, and use rugs to break up large dark expanses. As always, order a sample first — dark tones shift noticeably between natural and artificial light, so see it in your own room before you commit.

The questions we hear most before people buy.
Do dark floors make a room look smaller?
Not necessarily. In a well‑lit room a dark floor adds depth and warmth without shrinking the space — the trick is to keep walls and large furniture lighter so the room stays bright and the floor anchors it. In very small, low‑light rooms a lighter floor can feel more open.
Do dark floors show dust and scratches?
A little more than light floors, yes — dust, pet hair and footprints are more visible on a dark surface. A quick regular sweep keeps them looking sharp, and a water‑resistant hybrid board makes cleaning easy. Scratches are less of an issue on a quality board with a good wear layer.
Is there a true black floor?
The closest in a tough, water‑resistant board is a deep charcoal hybrid, which reads as near‑black underfoot. True jet‑black floors are rare because they show everything; charcoal gives you the dramatic dark look while staying far more practical day to day.
Is dark hybrid flooring water resistant?
Yes. Our dark hybrid boards use the same stone‑based, highly water‑resistant core as the rest of the hybrid range, so they suit kitchens, laundries and busy homes. See our water resistance guide for the detail.
