Our iDesign herringbone engineered timber delivers the timeless elegance of a classic herringbone pattern with the stability and practicality of modern engineering. Each plank features a genuine 3mm timber veneer over a multi-layered core, creating an authentic zigzag pattern that adds depth, movement, and architectural interest to any room. If you want a floor that makes a genuine design statement, herringbone is the way to do it.

Common Questions Before You Order.

Where does herringbone flooring look best?

Herringbone makes the biggest impact in living rooms, dining areas, entryways, and hallways where the pattern can run uninterrupted. It's a classic choice for open-plan spaces because the zigzag pattern creates visual flow and makes rooms feel larger. It also works beautifully in bedrooms and home offices where you want a premium, design-led look. Avoid wet areas like bathrooms and laundries - for those spaces, our SPC herringbone range is the better option.

Is herringbone harder to install than standard planks?

Herringbone does take more planning and precision than a standard plank layout. The angled cuts and pattern alignment mean it's slower to lay, and waste is typically a bit higher (we recommend 15% rather than 10%). That said, with tongue-and-groove or click-lock profiles, a confident DIYer can absolutely tackle it. If you want a flawless result with tight pattern alignment, professional installation is worth considering - and Brisbane customers can book installers directly through us.

What size are the herringbone planks?

Our iDesign herringbone planks are 600mm x 125mm x 15mm with a 3mm real timber veneer on top. This is a generous plank size that creates a bold, visible herringbone pattern without looking busy or cluttered. The 15mm total thickness gives excellent stability and a solid feel underfoot, and the 3mm veneer means the floor can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifetime.

Stop Overthinking It, Herringbone Is the Upgrade Your Space Deserves.

You've been scrolling through renovation inspiration and the same pattern keeps catching your eye - herringbone. There's a reason it's been used in grand European homes for centuries and is now the go-to for premium Australian renovations. It adds architectural detail, visual depth, and a sense of craftsmanship that standard plank layouts simply can't match. With engineered construction, you get that timeless look with modern stability.

Is herringbone engineered timber waterproof?

Not fully waterproof like SPC hybrid, but engineered timber handles moisture much better than solid hardwood. The multi-layer core resists expansion and contraction from humidity changes, so it won't cup or buckle under normal conditions. It's fine for kitchens where spills get wiped up promptly, but we don't recommend it for bathrooms, laundries, or any room where standing water is likely. For wet areas, our SPC herringbone range is the better option.

Can I install herringbone flooring myself?

Yes, though herringbone is more involved than standard plank installation. The key is getting your centre line right and keeping the pattern aligned as you work outward. With click-lock or tongue-and-groove profiles, you don't need glue or nails. You'll need a tape measure, spacers, tapping block, a mitre saw for the angled cuts, and patience. Allow extra time compared to a standard layout. If you want a guaranteed clean result, especially in large open-plan areas, professional installation is a smart investment.

What's the difference between engineered and SPC herringbone?

Both come in the herringbone pattern, but the construction is completely different. Engineered herringbone has a real 3mm timber veneer on top, giving you genuine wood grain, warmth, and the ability to sand and refinish over time. SPC herringbone uses a printed vinyl layer over a waterproof stone polymer core - it's tougher against water and scratches but doesn't have the authentic timber feel. Choose engineered for premium living spaces where you want real wood character. Choose SPC for wet areas, rentals, or high-traffic family homes.

How do I maintain herringbone engineered timber?

Regular sweeping or vacuuming keeps grit off the surface - this is the main thing that prevents micro-scratches over time. Damp mop with warm water and a pH-neutral timber floor cleaner when needed. Avoid steam mops, excessive water, and harsh chemicals. Use felt pads under furniture legs and mats at entry points. The herringbone joints are no different to maintain than standard planks. With basic care, your herringbone floor will last decades, and the 3mm veneer means it can be lightly sanded and refinished if needed down the track.

How much herringbone flooring should I order?

Measure each room's length and width in metres, multiply to get the total square metreage, and add 15% for waste. Herringbone layouts require more cuts than standard plank installation, especially around edges and doorways, so the extra 5% over the usual 10% is important. If you're covering multiple rooms or have an unusual layout, send us your room dimensions and we'll calculate exactly what you need. We do this every day and we'll make sure you don't over-order or run short.
