Hybrid flooring is one of the easiest floors there is to look after — its tough wear layer and water-resistant core shrug off the spills and traffic of a busy home. A little routine care keeps it looking new for years. Here's exactly how to clean it, what to avoid, and how to protect it.

Everyday cleaning

Day to day, the main job is keeping grit off the floor — fine dust and sand are what actually wear a surface over time. Sweep, dust-mop or vacuum regularly (use the hard-floor setting and turn the beater bar off so it doesn't scuff the boards). For a deeper clean, go over it with a well-wrung damp microfibre mop. The key word is damp, not wet: hybrid is water resistant, but there's no need to flood it — a light, barely-moist mop is all it takes.

Use the right cleaner

Stick to a pH-neutral hard-floor cleaner — the kind made for vinyl, laminate or hybrid floors. Follow the dilution on the bottle, and never let water pool: mop in sections and let it dry. Plain warm water on a microfibre mop is fine for a quick going-over between proper cleans. And always wipe up spills as they happen rather than leaving them to sit.

What not to use

A few things will damage a hybrid floor, so keep them well away:

  • Steam mops. The combination of heat and moisture can force water into the joints and damage the boards — never use one on hybrid.
  • Wax, polish and oil soaps. Hybrid never needs sealing or polishing; these just leave a dull, sticky film that's hard to remove.
  • Abrasive pads, scourers and harsh chemicals like bleach and ammonia, which can scratch or dull the surface.

Dealing with spills and marks

Spills wipe straight up with a damp cloth — the sooner the better. For stubborn scuffs or marks, a clean pencil eraser often lifts them, and a little methylated spirits on a soft cloth shifts tougher marks like rubber heel scuffs. Test any spot treatment in an out-of-the-way corner first.

Protect your floor

A few small habits do most of the work of keeping a floor pristine:

  • Felt pads under the legs of chairs, tables and sofas — the single best thing you can do to prevent scratches.
  • Mats at the doors to catch grit before it reaches the floor. Choose colourfast, breathable mats rather than rubber-backed ones, which can mark some floors.
  • Lift, don't drag furniture and appliances across the floor.
  • Trim pet claws and stay on top of grit — it's the main cause of fine surface wear.
  • Blinds or curtains for windows that get very strong, direct sun, which can fade any floor over many years.

A simple routine

  • As needed: sweep or vacuum the high-traffic paths and wipe up spills.
  • Weekly: damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner.
  • Ongoing: check the felt pads, shake out the mats, keep claws and grit in check.

That's genuinely all there is to it — no sanding, sealing or special treatments, ever. Look after it this way and a quality hybrid floor will stay looking new right through its 25-year residential warranty and beyond.
